25th round: "Real" could not beat "Getafe" at home © EuroFootball.com

On Sunday in the 25th round of the Spanish championship, Madrid's "Real" team failed to defeat the city's other team, "Getafe," and had to settle for a 1-1 draw.

The visitors dominated the beginning of the match and rightfully took the lead in the 38th minute when Daniel Gueiza scored, but "Getafe" was in the lead very briefly, as Ruud van Nistelrooy equalized from the penalty spot just before half-time.

Although in the second half "Real" completely dominated the field, they couldn't break through "Getafe's" defense and had to settle for a draw. After these matches, the Royal club has only won one of their last five home matches.

So far the last-placed team in the Spanish championship, Taragona's "Gimnastic," won 2-0 away against another team fighting for survival in the league, Bilbao's "Athletic," and climbed to second-to-last place.

"Athletic's" situation was further worsened by the fact that convincing victory at home 3-1 against Valencia's "Levante" was achieved by the club in 18th place until then, "Mallorca."

In other Sunday matches, "Zaragoza" fought for a spot in European tournaments and defeated the bottom-placed San Sebastian team "Real Sociedad" 3-2 at home.

"Espanyol," still hopeful for a spot in European tournaments, had to settle for a 1-1 draw at home against "Villarreal," while standings neighbors Santander's "Racing" secured a narrow victory against Pamplona's "Osasuna."

Seville's "Betis," showing signs of recovery, won a minimal victory against local team "Deportivo" in La Coruña, while in the final round of matches, Huelva's "Recreativo" unexpectedly celebrated a 1-0 victory at home against Madrid's "Atletico" team. The only goal of the match was scored by Frenchman Florent Sinama-Pongolle from the penalty spot in the 10th minute. However, that same player missed the opportunity to double the lead five minutes later when he failed to score another penalty from eleven meters.
