A bizarre 11-meter penalty kick was assigned to the gates of "Roma" in the Europa League

"Roma" team suffered greatly from a referee's mistake on Thursday evening.

In the third round of the UEFA Europa League at home, "Roma" faced the "Borussia" team from Monchengladbach, letting the victory slip away in extra time.

The "Romans" took the lead in the 32nd minute after Nicolo Zaniolo's goal, but in the 93rd minute, "Gladbach" was awarded an 11m penalty, which took away the victory from the hosts - 1:1.

The penalty was awarded after the referee believed that the ball hit the hand of "Roma" defender Chris Smalling, but upon review, a completely different image was seen - the ball hit the player's face.

"Roma" issued a statement after the match, confirming that the referees later admitted their mistake and apologized to the "Roma" team.

Smalling himself, commenting on the episode, also could not believe the referee's decision: "Unbelievable... We deserved all three points, so sad..."
