A Group: The Swiss Defeated the Turks, But Stayed in Third Place © AFP

On Sunday, the third round of group stage matches started in the European Championship. In Group A at the Baku stadium, Switzerland's team tried to overcome the Turks with a solid margin in hopes of securing second place. Although Vladimir Petković's boys won 3-1, they had to settle for third place in the group. Switzerland will have to wait for the results of other teams and hope to advance to the quarterfinals as one of the best four teams finishing third in their group.

The Turks were already pushed against the wall at the beginning of the first half, when Haris Seferovič (6') and X. Shaqiri (26') scored. Goalkeeper Y. Sommer demonstrated a very confident game for Switzerland, making several crucial saves. I. Kahveci scored in the 62nd minute, but X. Shaqiri sealed the result with his second goal. In the 77th minute, G. Xhaka successfully converted a penalty kick.
