A Serbian chosen as the worst referee of the past world championship in the Champions League final.

T

oday UEFA announced the referee who will work in the upcoming Champions League final. To the surprise of many, the chosen one is Serbian Milorad Mažič, whom some football fans remember for his very unsuccessful 2014 World Cup.

Four years ago in Brazil, he officiated two matches, after which the referee was sent home. In the first match between Germany and Portugal, he awarded a questionable penalty to Portugal and also sent off Pepe for his collision with Thomas Muller.

His second officiation, between Iran and Argentina, also sparked controversy. The South American representatives won 1-0, and the referee did not award a penalty kick to Argentina.

"How will this man sleep tonight, or even for the rest of his life? With all due respect, I would like to talk to him face to face. I would like to ask: why did he behave like this with us?" - said the then coach of the Iranian national team, Carlos Queirozas, after the match.

After the competition, the portal redcardtheref.com selected the worst referee of the championship, and M. Mažič triumphed in the voting with 87,362 out of 110,000 votes from football fans.

However, in recent years, complaints against the Serbian have significantly decreased, and he has been much more successful. He officiated in the 2016 European Championship, was appointed to referee the FIFA Confederations Cup final last year, and this year he worked in four Champions League matches and two Europa League matches.
