Former „Milan“ and „Chelsea“ forward Andriy Shevchenko has joined the coaching staff of the Ukrainian national team and will help his country's team in the European Championship.
The 39-year-old Ukrainian has scored 48 goals for the national team during his career, and this achievement is the best in the country's football history. Shevchenko will work as an assistant to Mikhail Fomenko, replacing Alexandr Zavarov in that role.
Shevchenko himself, who recently completed a two-year course and obtained a UEFA coaching license, is excited about the opportunity to help his country's team.
„After almost four years of vacation, I am returning to football, but now as a coach. I have worked with great coaches - Valeriy Lobanovskyi, Carlo Ancelotti, and Jose Mourinho, which has given me a lot of experience. The coaching courses helped me better convey my ideas and shape my desired vision of football. I hope this will help me in the future,“ Shevchenko said.
By the way, in 2012, before appointing Mikhail Fomenko as the national team coach, the coaching position was offered to Shevchenko, but he refused the post citing lack of experience.
In the European Championship, Ukraine will play in Group C alongside the national teams of Germany, Poland, and Northern Ireland.
