The Lithuanian national football team has lost one of the most experienced defenders in the country. Team captain Aurelijus Skarbalius has decided to end his career in the national team, as announced on the official website of the Lithuanian Football Federation.
The 32-year-old defender informed the head coach of the national team, Algimantas Liubinskas, before the match against Belgium.
"Before these matches, he called me and said: 'Coach, I have made up my mind - I want to finish,'" Liubinskas said. "It's a pity that time flies. He was a true assistant to me, a true captain. The team spirit he instilled has entered the hearts of others."
Aurelijus Skarbalius made his debut in the national team in 1991. He is the player who has played the most matches for the Lithuanian national team - 65 - and scored 5 goals.
