One of the most famous English clubs of all time is expected to acquire right winger Jermaine Pennant for just over 6 million pounds sterling in the near future, the British media reports.
"Birmingham" revealed on Tuesday morning that they rejected a 3.5 million pound sterling offer for the 23-year-old Englishman, but in the evening a close source to the club confirmed to journalists that "Birmingham" accepted a better offer and J. Pennant could start negotiations with the 2005 European champions.
Liverpool manager Rafael Benitez stated on Monday that "by the weekend, two players could be added to the team."
It is almost certain that one of them will be J. Pennant, and the other should be Dutch national team forward Dirk Kuyt, if "Liverpool" can agree on a price with "Feyenoord," who are asking for 12 million pounds sterling for their star.
The arrival of J. Pennant should solve R. Benitez's headache over the right winger position. However, the Englishman is only a backup option, which was considered after Brazilian Daniel Alves from "Sevilla" appeared too expensive.
Former England youth national team member J. Pennant moved to "Birmingham" for 3 million pounds sterling in April 2005 from London's "Arsenal."
J. Pennant is one of the most controversial figures in England. In 2004, his driver's license was suspended for 16 months after he drove against traffic in London. An even bigger scandal arose in 2005 when he, despite being banned, drove a car while intoxicated. He became the first player in the history of the English Premier League to play on the field with a special police monitoring ankle bracelet to track his whereabouts.
In 2005, the English media also discussed rumors that "Birmingham" kicked J. Pennant out of training when he showed up drunk.
In 2003, J. Pennant was expelled from the England U-21 national team camp for violating curfew.
