Late Saturday evening the second participant of EURO 2020 quarterfinals was determined. It was the Italian national team, which defeated Austria 2:1 in extra time in the round of 16. In the first half, the Italians controlled the game, but did not create many dangerous opportunities. The closest to a goal in the first half of the match was Ciro Immobile hitting the goal post. In the second half, the Austrians gained some confidence, and in the 65th minute Marko Arnautović even sent the ball into the net, but after a VAR review, it was ruled out for offside. Neither team managed to score a goal in the 90 minutes, so they had to play extra time for the first time in this championship. The Italians showed their advantage in the first half of extra time: Federico Chiesa scored in the 95th minute, putting his team in front, and Matteo Pessina secured the team's lead in the 105th minute. In the second half of extra time, the Austrians added intrigue by scoring in the 114th minute through Saša Kalajdžić. However, the Italians did not let the victory slip away and advanced to the EURO 2020 quarterfinals.
