Blood, gangs, and relentless fighting in the streets of Marseille marked "Euro 2016" on Saturday.
Russian and English hooligans spilled each other's blood in the streets before the match between their national teams, where riot police tried to establish order, using tear gas at least three times.
However, the city of Marseille is now even more gripped by fear. After the England and Russia match, thousands of fans poured back into the streets, where local hooligans could also provoke incidents. Disturbances also occurred at the stadium. The Russian national team equalized the score during added time, and the match with England ended 1-1.
BBC reporters reported that after scoring a goal, Russian hooligans ran towards the English fans, with no police in sight. "I have never seen anyone behave like this before," said BBC correspondent Mark Chapman.
Former England defender Chris Waddle told BBC Radio 5: "What bothers me the most is that we know where the tickets were sold. Where was the separation of the fans? As soon as the final whistle blew, Russian fans were allowed to run through the stands. English fans were forced to flee." Waddle added: "Thousands of English fans were forced to run almost for their lives. We don't know who those people were. Maybe there were children and women? Now they all have to go into the night in Marseille."
