FA released a statement on Wednesday announcing that Manchester City center-back Martin Demichelis is under suspicion of misconduct related to betting activities.
The 35-year-old Argentine has been criticized this season for poor performance. The defender, whose contract with the Citizens ends this summer, has until April 5 to appeal the charges brought by the FA.
"The player has committed a violation of FA Rule E8 in relation to football matches between January 22 and 28, 2016," the official statement reads.
During this period, M. Demichelis played two matches with Man City. The Argentine played in the draw against West Ham and in the winning English League Cup match against Liverpool's Everton.
It is believed that M. Demichelis may have placed bets on these matches, although it is strictly prohibited for Premier League players to participate in betting. In the past, footballers in England were allowed to bet on matches they were not involved in, but due to the increasing number of betting scandals worldwide, the FA was forced to ban all forms of betting.
In the past, Swansea City player James Demetriou (fined £700) and former Tottenham player Andros Townsend (fined £18,000) have been punished for similar activities.
