Today, graduates of the London "Arsenal" academy defeated their peers from Brussels' "Anderlecht" after a penalty shootout and triumphed in the Future Cup.
In this U-17 tournament, the main 60-minute match ended goalless, so the teams had to settle the score from the penalty spot.
The "Gunners" defeated Salzburg's "Red Bull", Amsterdam's "Ajax", and the Ghanaian academy "Right To Dream" in the group stage. In the semi-finals, they also emerged victorious after a penalty shootout against Barcelona's eleven.
It is interesting that "Arsenal" not only became the first English team to win this trophy but also the only one to break the dominance of "Anderlecht" and "Ajax", as the graduates of those clubs had previously triumphed three times.
Manchester United and Liverpool's under-17s have reached the final before, but both lost to "Ajax".
It seems that Arsene Wenger has yet another talented generation of academy graduates at his disposal.
