The new goalkeeper for Arsenal, unsuccessfully searching in London, turned to Germany. In the crosshairs of the team led by Arsene Wenger, a twenty-year-old Leverkusen goalkeeper Rene Adler found himself.
The tall goalkeeper drew attention to himself at the World Youth Championship, where he reliably defended the goal of the German national team. His successful performance did not go unnoticed, not only in the goalkeeper's homeland but also in foreign countries.
Arsenal intends to acquire a goalkeeper this summer who could competently compete for a place in the team with the not very reliable current Arsenal goalkeepers - German Jens Lehmann and Spaniard Manuel Almunia. The English had already set their sights on Uruguayan Sebastian Viera, but the negotiations ended unsuccessfully.
"We know about Arsenal's interest," said Bayer's executive Michael Reschke. "Rene is a solid, young goalkeeper whose contract expires in 2006, so it's not surprising that other clubs are interested in him."
The Leverkusen team does not hide their desire to extend the contract, but the young goalkeeper himself says that he is not completely satisfied with the short time spent on the field. The main Bayer goalkeeper's position has not been given up for the umpteenth year by Hans Jorg Butt.
According to unofficial information, R. Adler's services are also of interest to teams in London and Rotterdam's Feyenoord.
