Fernando Morientes has not yet scored a goal in his three appearances wearing the famous Liverpool shirt, but the Spanish striker hopes that fortune will soon smile upon him, and his contract will not be in vain.
The former Real Madrid striker has already helped the "Reds" reach the final of the English League Cup, defeating the lower league Watford team 2-0. The next match for Liverpool will be the final match against Chelsea, which will take place on February 27th at Cardiff's Millennium Stadium.
"Nando" believes that this will be one of the best opportunities for him to prove that he is also part of Rafael Benitez's team. "My first impression of Liverpool is very good," said the Spaniard. "It is one of the biggest clubs in Europe, and I am confident that we can achieve our plans to become even stronger and win more awards than in recent years."
"I really appreciate my teammates, but for now it's quite difficult for me to compare them to my friends from Real, as the game here in England is very different. But no matter what happens, the players are ready to give their all for the club and the fans. We still have chances to win trophies this year, but we need to be cautious."
Liverpool is currently going through a really tough time. Two of the main strikers, Djibril Cisse and Florent Sinama-Pongolle, have suffered serious injuries and will not play until the end of the season. Because of these shortages, Morientes and Czech Milan Baros are the main force in Liverpool's attacks.
The Spaniard is almost guaranteed that the team will succeed. He said, "I cannot promise that my partnership with Baros will bring trophies to Anfield this season, but it is the goal for this and the following seasons. I believe that the Baros-Morientes attack will be really effective, as we are the main goal scorers. We didn't have much time to get to know each other's game better, but I believe we will move forward firmly and quickly."
After spending seven trophy-filled years in Madrid, Morientes could have asked for some time to settle in a new environment in north-west England, but when there are many players as well as coaches from Spain, Fernando said he feels almost at home.
"I feel very good in Liverpool; Rafa Benitez, Antonio Nunez, Xabi Alonso, Luis Garcia and Josemi help me a lot to get used to it here and the further I go, the more comfortable I feel in England," Fernando rejoiced. "I also talked to a few Spanish players who explained to me what the training plans are and how the team likes to play. All I can do is ask Liverpool fans to be patient with me. I believe that we will soon achieve positive results and goals will pour in abundantly. As I played with the team, I think we are strong together now and will be even stronger in the future."
