Bergamo "Atalanta" team coach Gian Piero Gasperini fell ill with coronavirus and could have infected many people. It turned out that the Italian was leading the team while sick during the scandalous Champions League match against "Valencia", which was later called a "biological bomb".
The first leg of the Champions League quarter-final took place on February 19th at the "San Siro" stadium in Milan, with the second leg later in Valencia.
The town of Bergamo, near Milan, was one of the epicenters of the coronavirus pandemic in Italy, and the spread of the disease was greatly influenced by this match. Over 40,000 spectators were present at the Milan stadium.
62-year-old G.P. Gasperini recently underwent COVID-19 tests and it was revealed that he has antibodies. The coach then realized that he likely fell ill during the match in Valencia, as he felt some symptoms of the disease.
"I felt bad the night before the match, and it was even worse on the day of the game. You can see it in the photos. I didn't sleep for two nights," said the Italian to "La Gazzetta dello Sport".
"Atalanta" celebrated their entry into the Champions League quarter-finals after a successful confrontation with the Spanish club (winning 4-1 at home and 4-3 away) in a restaurant in Italy.
"The chef served us food and expensive champagne. After tasting it, I said that it tasted like water and the food looked like bread. I couldn't taste anything at all," said the coach.
The goalkeeper Marco Sportiello was also infected with coronavirus in the "Atalanta" club, while "Valencia" announced that even 35% of the team members tested positive.
