"Barcelona" fined for fans displaying Catalonian flags

The Catalan club received UEFA sanctions for the display of Catalan flags by their fans in the Champions League final in Berlin.

Barca was fined 30,000 euros administratively.

On June 6, Luis Enrique's team defeated Juventus 3-1 in the decisive Champions League match, and their favorite team was traditionally supported by a large army of fans at the Berlin Olympic Stadium. Many of them brought and displayed so-called "esteledas" - yellow and red striped flags with a white or red star.

On Thursday, the UEFA Disciplinary Committee meeting held in Nyon, Switzerland, decided to interpret this as a political statement. Such actions are prohibited by the organization's rules and competition regulations.

The committee reviewing the incident equated the flag displayed by the fans to "unacceptable banners" and imposed an administrative fine of 30,000 euros on the Catalan club - less than previously announced. Earlier, it was reported that Barca was facing a 75,000 euro fine and even a temporary closure of parts of the Camp Nou stands in Champions League matches.

"The club respects UEFA's decision, but does not agree with it and reserves the right to use legal means to defend the rights of its fans. In addition, UEFA delegates during and after the Champions League final evaluated the behavior of the club's fans as exemplary and noted this in their report," the Barcelona official statement released on Thursday evening said.
