Today in the evening there is another intriguing Champions League quarter-final match waiting for UEFA - two well-acquainted opponents face each other. Arsene Wenger's London "Arsenal" will seek to finally break the barrier of Munich's "Bayern."
London "Arsenal" and Munich "Bayern" have faced each other four times in the past five seasons - two matches in the quarter-finals and in the group stage.
The "Gunners" do not have a favorable history of matches with "Bayern" in the Champions League quarter-finals - the Bavarians eliminated the "Gunners" in the seasons of 2004-05, 2012-13, and 2013-14.
This season, Bayern did not take first place in the group stage for the first time since the 2009-10 season, conceding it to Madrid's "Atletico" club. In that season, the Bavarians reached the final but lost after a tough battle against Milan's "Inter."
Meanwhile, "Arsenal" won their group for the first time since the 2011-12 season. This is also the first time since the 2005-06 season (when the "Gunners" reached the final) that they remained unbeaten in the group stage.
"Arsenal" has been eliminated in the quarter-finals five times in their last attempts (twice against "Bayern"), while the Bavarian club has reached the Champions League semi-finals for the last five seasons in a row.
Bayern has won 15 consecutive matches in the Champions League at the "Allianz" fortress - the longest winning streak in the tournament's history. Scoring 53 goals and conceding only eight during this winning streak, the Bavarians last lost at home in the 2013-14 season against Madrid's "Real."
The North London club has suffered defeat in the first leg of the quarter-finals for five consecutive seasons.
Robert Lewandowski has scored 14 goals in 12 home Champions League matches. The Polish football star failed to score only last April against Lisbon's "Benfica."
