German champion Bayern Munich has exchanged the national team's defender Torsten Frings and acquired Werder Bremen's defender Valérien Ismaël. Both Bundesliga clubs agreed on this transfer today, but the broader details of the deal are not disclosed.

Ismaël will sign a three-year contract with Bayern and is expected to take a place in the center of defense alongside Lucio, replacing Robert Kovač who moved to Juventus. The 29-year-old Frenchman arrived at Werder from Strasbourg two years ago, winning the German championship and cup in his first season abroad.

On the other hand, 28-year-old Frings returns to Werder, where he spent six seasons before moving to Borussia in 2002. Last summer, the player transferred to Bayern, playing 29 matches and winning the Bundesliga title, and now arrives at Werder Bremen, where he has signed a three-year contract.

"We are pleased with this purchase. Torsten is constantly playing in the main lineup of the German national team and has shown his mastery at the highest level in recent years," said Werder's sports director Klaus Allofs.
