“Bayern” president Uli Hoeness commented on the unsuccessful negotiations with Leverkusen’s “Bayer” midfielder Xabi Alonso.
The 42-year-old Spaniard was tempted to move to the multiple German champions’ club, but decided to stay in his current team.
“As my wife said: ‘If Xabi has character, he won’t agree. And vice versa - if he says ‘yes’, then the coach lacks character and he would be a bad choice.”
As always, my wife was right.
Alonso explained to me that they created a revolution in Leverkusen and many players joined the team just because of the coach himself, so now changes are impossible.
The coach has a contract with “Bayer” until mid-2026 and if he shows character, he will not go to any other club.
This move gives him a chance to take over “Bayern” in the future,” reassured U. Hoeness.
