Munich's "Bayern" team continues to lay the foundations for the future. This time, the German champions signed a contract with rising Canadian star Alphonso Davies.
The 17-year-old, who plays for Vancouver's "Whitecaps," will become the most expensive MLS player in history. "Bayern" will pay $13 million for the player. This amount could increase up to $19 million with various bonuses.
Until now, the record belonged to American Jozy Altidore, for whom "Villareal" paid $10 million in 2008.
The player was supposed to undergo a medical examination in Philadelphia on Tuesday, and that was all that was needed for the Bavarians to officially acquire the player.
"He has already signed a contract with us, but he still needs to undergo a medical examination. He will arrive in Europe on January 1st, when he turns 18 and can play for "Bayern"," Karl-Heinz Rummenigge said earlier.
Due to his young age, A. Davies cannot come to Munich yet. FIFA rules state that a minor player cannot move to another club outside their country. For this reason, A. Davies will only become a member of the "Bayern" team on the first day of January.
The player will only turn 18 in November of this year. Nevertheless, from the end of October, it will be harder for A. Davies to maintain his fitness, as his team's MLS season will end then.
This season, the Canadian managed to score 3 goals and make 6 assists in 20 MLS matches. The player has also already represented the Canadian national team and scored three times in those matches.
