BBC journalist: "There were women and children sheltering in the stadium"

As predicted, after the clash between the England and Russia teams in Group B of the European Championship, unrest spilled from the stadium into the night city of Marseille.

After the final whistle, Russian fans attacked the "Three Lions" supporters in the arena, who were forced to flee and jump over the barriers.

England goalkeeper Joe Hart urged the fans to stay safe, saying "Be safe, stay here".

BBC journalist Nick Eardley wrote: "I have never seen anything like this at a football stadium. Panicked English fans were running away from attacking Russians, women and children were trampled.

Both the English and the French who came to watch the match were forced to climb over the stadium fences.".

According to the press, several English fans were seriously injured in the streets of Marseille, attacked by hooligans armed with knives and metal bars.

After such a night, the social network "Twitter" was buzzing with messages calling for Russia to be stripped of the right to host the 2018 World Cup.

Dana Hughes-McConnell wrote: "Russia should be sent home because of their fans' behavior".

Paul Pettitt added: "Will English fans be able to safely attend the World Cup matches in Russia? I seriously doubt it now".

UEFA announced that they have begun an investigation into the unrest of the previous night, and sanctions may be imposed on the Russians for the attacks of their fans at the Marseille stadium.
