On Sunday (04-19) in the Italian "Serie A" championship, an extraordinary day will be the Milan derby, starting at 21:45 Lithuanian time, writes 15min.lt. The teams will enter the field under similar circumstances as 14 years ago, when the biggest clash in Milan derby history was recorded. Neither of the clubs dreams of winning the "Scudetto", but the principled match will still be particularly interesting. Paulius Viluckas suggests looking back at what happened at the "San Siro" 14 years ago.
The 2000-01 season was far from the most successful for both Milan superclubs. On May 11, 2001, both Inter and Milan had only 44 points, 20 points behind the league leaders and future champions Roma.
However, the teams fought for honor and the last spot in the Champions League, which was still reachable. The fans who arrived at the stadium probably did not anticipate the nature of the match awaiting them. With the final whistle blown by Pierluigi Collina, one of the most unbelievable results in modern Serie A history was displayed on the scoreboard – Inter scored a round zero goals, while Milan had a long list of goals.
Inter's biggest problems were caused by Serginho, who scored 3 goals and added one himself. However, the most memorable was G.Comandini's performance. In Serie A matches, this striker shone for 19 minutes, and thanks to his goals, Milan achieved an unforgettable victory.
As a result of health problems, G.Comandini ended his career in 2005, exchanging football boots for a DJ booth. The derby on May 11, 2001, remains one of the most memorable moments of his life.
After almost 14 years since these matches, today the fashion city's football giants will once again step onto the field at the "San Siro" thinking they are at rock bottom. They are almost 30 points away from the Serie A leaders Juventus.
Even the positions in the Europa League now seem like an impossible task for Milan and Inter clubs. In the remaining eight matches of the championship, the only goal is the fight for a higher place in the league table.
