The police have detained the father of one of the best English footballers, Wayne Rooney Sr., who is suspected of being involved in illegal gambling. According to some other reports, another member of the Rooney family - "Man Utd" striker's uncle Richie Rooney - ended up in custody as well.

During a special operation, officers arrested a total of nine individuals. They are suspected of being involved in a betting scandal that shook Scotland in December 2010.

At the match between "Motherwell" and Edinburgh "Hearts", the first team's goalkeeper Steve Jennings received a red card for touching the referee and insulting him. Prior to this, large sums of around 500 pounds sterling were placed in betting offices to ensure that the referee would show at least one red card. In case of a win, the odds would increase tenfold.

Jennings is also among those detained, but he denies his guilt.
