„Bundesliga“ has confirmed that starting from the 2015-16 season, goal-line technology will be used.
In Germany, there has been increasing discussion about it since last year, when Leverkusen's „Bayer“ forward Stefan Kiessling scored a „ghost goal“ against „Hoffenheim“. The necessity of technology was also widely debated after the cup final in May of the same year. During the final, it seemed like Dortmund's „Borussia“ defender Mats Hummels' header crossed the goal line, but the goal was not awarded and Munich's „Bayern“ triumphed with a score of 2-0.
During a meeting of club representatives in Frankfurt, 15 out of 18 agreed to the use of the „hawk-eye“ starting from the next season.
„Bayern“ club, which has supported this initiative from the beginning, executive director Karl-Heinz Rummenigge spoke about the importance of the innovation last spring.
„In the future, we must protect football and especially referees.“
„Referees do not have the opportunity to review video replays and slowed-down recordings, not to mention mathematical calculations. They are very vulnerable to pressure from fans and this is not acceptable. This should and must be avoided in the future.“
The second „Bundesliga“ rejected goal-line technology back in March.
It was first introduced in the 2012 FIFA Club World Cup, and the English „Premier“ League began using the innovation regularly in the 2013-14 season.
