The new head coach of the Nigerian national team became German Berti Vogts on Monday. The 60-year-old former strategist of the Scottish national team took over the team from Nigerian Austin Eguavoen, who led the "Super Eagles" for the past two years.
According to the Nigerian Football Federation, Frenchman Philippe Troussier also applied for the position alongside B. Vogts.
"After long and difficult negotiations, we are pleased to announce that B. Vogts has agreed to coach our national team," the federation said in a statement.
The "Super Eagles", who finished third in the Africa Cup of Nations last year, did not qualify for the 2006 World Cup.
It is expected that the German will make his debut as the head coach of the Nigerian national team in the upcoming qualifying matches for the 2008 Africa Cup of Nations against the Ugandan team.
