Former London's "Arsenal" player Charlie Nicholas believes that the club did not make a mistake in attracting 37-year-old Mikel Arteta to the position of coach.
On Friday, it was officially announced that after today's match against Liverpool, M. Arteta will take over the reins of the Everton team, where he has only worked as an assistant coach at Manchester City so far.
C. Nicholas admitted that he would have preferred Brendan Rodgers, but M. Arteta was the second most ideal candidate.
"I preferred Rodgers, but 'Arsenal' couldn't attract him, and they still needed a new person, so Arteta was my second choice. He can create a modern football project here," said Nicholas.
"Arsene Wenger also came to 'Arsenal' without any reputation, but we saw how it all ended. I think Arteta greatly benefited from working with Guardiola, who is the best in his field.
Mikel is a very intelligent person, but also a good team leader. He was respected both at Everton and at Arsenal, where he is still respected.
I didn't want 'Arsenal' to follow the example of Manchester United and hire the most famous coaches. They guarantee the team one or two titles, but you won't create the future with them," added C. Nicholas.
