The injured "Barcelona" captain Carles Puyol returned to Barcelona with his teammates after the Champions League match, and on Wednesday he will undergo thorough examinations.
The official website of "Barcelona" club announced that C.Puyol landed awkwardly on his right elbow at the end of the unsuccessful match. The 34-year-old defender was urgently taken to a hospital in Lisbon. There, he was visited by the club president Sandro Rosell and club director Andoni Zubizarreta.
C.Puyol was given anesthetics, and later he returned to Barcelona with the team and spent the night in a hospital in the city.
Further examinations will be carried out on Wednesday to determine the seriousness of the "Barcelona" captain's injury and the course of treatment.
It is reported that C.Puyol will not be able to play in the upcoming "El Clasico" match on Saturday, but there are concerns in the Spanish media that the footballer may be forced to retire altogether.
The "Barcelona" team captain was out for six weeks due to a knee injury and made his return in Tuesday's match against "Benfica" after the break.
