The famous footballer Eric Cantona wants to become the new President of France.

The 45-year-old former "Man Utd" forward has sent letters to 36 thousand mayors in the country asking for their support for his candidacy. In order to participate in the elections, he needs at least 500 signatures from elected officials.

In a statement distributed by "Liberation", Cantona writes: "This decision obliges me to speak more sincerely than usual, but feeling the responsibility and seeing how complex choices that will determine our future are timely living in the state. French youth are in a socially unjust situation: this problem is too widespread, too strong, and too systematic."

The candidates who gather enough signatures will compete in the first round of elections at the end of April. The second round, in which the two candidates with the most votes will enter, will take place at the beginning of May. Although Cantona is a famous footballer, his chances of successfully performing in elections without party support are viewed skeptically.

He is already known for his political statements: in 2010, he urged fellow citizens to empty their bank accounts to protest against the global economic crisis.

During his playing career, Cantona also could not avoid controversies: the talented striker, known for his lack of discipline, has famously kicked a spectator and in 1995, he has pushed a "Crystal Palace" fan.
