The hosts took the lead in the first half. In the 21st minute, Giuseppe Mascara headed the ball crossed by Giorgio Luceni into the opponent's goal. However, after 15 minutes, the visitors also responded with a goal. Viktor Boudianski scored with a precise penalty kick. At the beginning of the second half, the visitors even managed to move ahead – in the 49th minute, Giampietro Pettrulli shot at the goal, and the "Catania" goalkeeper made a big mistake, allowing the ball to slip through his hands into the goal.

The visitors did not slow down and scored their third goal in a row after three minutes. "Ascoli" players could once again thank the hosts' goalkeeper Armando Pantanelli, who failed to catch Paolo Zanetti's shot and let the ball slip through his hands. However, the hosts did not give up and reduced the gap in the 69th minute. Fabio Caserta's shot deflected off a defender, changing direction and flying into the goal, leaving the "Ascoli" goalkeeper helpless.

With 14 minutes left until the end of the match, "Catania" managed to score the equalizer. Giorgio Corona was brought down in the opponents' penalty area, and the referee awarded a penalty kick to the visitors. Gionatha Spinesi, standing up to take the kick, did not disappoint the team's fans, equalizing the score.
