The Spanish Football Federation announced on Tuesday at a press conference that there will no longer be the usual Super Cup format starting from next season.
This season, changes have already been made to the tournament - the usual two matches, where the winners of La Liga and the King's Cup meet, have been replaced by one match. For the first time in the country's history, the final match took place outside of Spain - in Morocco.
Now it has finally been decided to completely eliminate such types of matches and create a completely different system.
From now on, before the season, a "final four" will be organized, with both finalists of the King's Cup and the two clubs that finished in the top two positions in La Liga participating.
The "final four" will also not be played in Spain - the matches will be organized abroad. It is planned that both the semifinals and final will take place in the same city. The tournament should last no longer than four days.
It is unclear how the major Spanish clubs will react to these changes. For example, Real Madrid, Barcelona, and Atletico Madrid are frequent participants in the UEFA Super Cup, so the additional burden is not what the clubs want at the start of the season.
