On Wednesday evening, at Stamford Bridge stadium, Chelsea and Tottenham teams opened the Carabao Cup semi-finals. At home, Chelsea's players triumphed 2-0 in the first leg match. The "Aristocrats" pressed their opponents from the start of the match and this pressure paid off. In the 5th minute, Kai Havertz put the hosts ahead after the ball rebounded off Tottenham's defender Davinson Sanchez. Chelsea doubled their lead in the 34th minute. Then, after a penalty kick confusion in the penalty area between Tottenham defenders Tanguy and Ben Davies, the ball ended up in the net. In the second half, Tottenham had only one decent chance to decrease the deficit, right at the end of the match. Chelsea, on the other hand, had several opportunities to score a third goal, with Timo Werner being dangerous a few times from set-piece situations, but the result remained the same as it was after the first half. Interestingly, in this match both managers had to employ an unusual tactical formation with 4 defenders. Thomas Tuchel did this due to Silva contracting coronavirus, and other center-backs not being fully recovered from injuries, while Antonio Conte changed his tactical formation after a very poor first half, substituting Matt Doherty. Kai Havertz was also replaced after the first half, allegedly with a broken finger. Romelu Lukaku, who was recently removed from the team for a controversial interview, played for Chelsea in these matches.
