Karim Benzema led the "Royal" club to victory, scoring in the 9th minute to put his team ahead, and securing "Real's" advantage in the 32nd minute. This victory not only guaranteed Madrid's team a spot in the quarterfinals but also secured the first place in Group B. Despite the loss, "Gladbach" also advanced to the quarterfinals, as in the other group match, Milan's "Inter" failed to beat Donetsk's "Shakhtar" team at home - the match ended goalless. The Italian club controlled the game throughout, but the Ukrainian club successfully defended and earned a point, allowing them to continue in the UEFA Europa League this season.
