Bilbao "Athletic" managed to end a 40-year drought of major titles.
In the "Copa del Rey" (King's Cup) final, the Basques defeated the tournament surprise package "Mallorca" after a penalty shootout. The main time and extra time ended with a score of 1:1.
In the 21st minute, a corner kick led to Dani Rodriguez putting "Mallorca" ahead.
In the 50th minute, Nico Williams made a beautiful pass to Oihan Sancet, who equalized the score.
Athletic seemed superior throughout the match, but they couldn't convert their dominance into goals. In extra time, "Mallorca" forward Vedat Muriqi had a dangerous opportunity.
During the penalty shootout, Manu Morlanes and Nemanja Radonjic of Mallorca missed, and the Basques triumphed, winning 4:2.
The last time "Athletic" won the "Copa del Rey" trophy was almost 40 years ago. They have won two Spanish Super Cups in the meantime, but they don't compare to this cup.
