Cristiano Ronaldo on Monday won the FIFA Golden Ball for the third time in his career. Portugal easily defeated the Argentinian Lionel Messi and the German Manuel Neuer.
"I want to become one of the best players in history. Of course, it takes a lot of effort, but I hope I will succeed," said the star of Real Madrid.
Portugal received 37.66% of the votes, while his main opponents received half as much.
Receiving the award, C. Ronaldo finished his speech with a loud shout. After the ceremony, journalists asked him about this episode.
"Players know that I always do this when I score a goal and when the team wins. That's our motto in the Real team," explained the footballer.
Despite being considered the favorite to win, C. Ronaldo admitted that he did not feel calm.
"I wasn't calm, I was nervous. Everything was like last year, only this year I didn't cry. You can't cry all the time! After so many years, I expected to win," said the athlete.
C. Ronaldo is competing with L. Messi, who has won four Golden Ball titles.
"Winning five and surpassing L. Messi? I said that as a joke, because he has four. I'm not obsessed with trophies. It's a pleasant appreciation, but the most important thing is victories with Real," said C. Ronaldo.
