One of the world's best footballers, Cristiano Ronaldo, arrived at a court in Madrid on Tuesday, amidst a huge crowd of fans and journalists. The footballer, accused of tax evasion, faces a huge fine.
The Portuguese player is accused of hiding taxes from 2011 to 2014, when he played for the Madrid-based club "Real". The hidden amount amounts to almost 15 million euros.
One of the best-paid footballers in the world appeared in court on Tuesday morning with his fiancée Georgina Rodriguez. The footballer was in a good mood, posing for photographers.
However, Ronaldo's lawyers requested that the football star be allowed to enter the court premises by car, avoiding public exposure. But this was not allowed, and Ronaldo had to enter the court through the main entrance like an ordinary person.
According to the BBC, Cristiano Ronaldo is likely to be fined 18.8 million euros and sentenced to 23 months of suspended imprisonment – as agreed with the Spanish tax authorities. According to Spanish law, for non-violent crimes, sentences of up to two years of imprisonment are usually not served in prison, only as suspended sentences. So Cristiano Ronaldo is unlikely to see the inside of a prison cell.
