Chelsea's striker Didier Drogba told the English newspaper "The People" that due to Jose Mourinho's tactical ideas, he had to defend more and couldn't score as many goals as he did at Marseille.
"We will see if next season there will be a striker who will defend for the team like a maniac, as I did last season. Next season, I will try to think more about myself - so I don't fall behind Thierry Henry's 15 goals again. Last season, I decided to sacrifice myself for the whole team and forget about my goal count," Drogba quotes "The People."
"I thought I would have to run less after the ball. I have my thoughts about our game in the second half of the season. The only way we played was high passes to me. I would like to play football receiving the ball at my feet. It's true that injuries thinned us out, but that doesn't explain everything. I helped Lampard and Cole shine. I sacrificed for Chelsea's interests," complained the player from the Ivory Coast.
Drogba also stated that it was very difficult for him to adapt in England, and he even thought about returning to France: "I didn't think I would stay. The night started at three in the afternoon and it rained all the time. It was a bit too difficult for someone who was also trying to get back in shape. I was expecting it to be tough, but I never thought it would be this hard."
Despite criticizing Mourinho's tactics, Drogba insisted that he gets along very well with his coach: "We can talk openly and without any problems. The coach completely trusts me, he showed that all season. I was always in the starting lineup when I wasn't injured. Mourinho always supported me, and I trust him too. I trust him so much that I even played with a broken leg. Still, he wanted me here, even though the team owner wanted Ronaldo more."
Meanwhile, according to reports from the English media, Chelsea is close to reaching an agreement with Manchester City for the acquisition of Shaun Wright-Phillips. The Manchester team rejected Chelsea's initial offer, but the 23-year-old player expressed a desire to move to London, so negotiations seem to have started anew.
