D. Maradona: Messi doesn't have to prove anything at the World Cup

Brest's "Dynamo" board chairman Diego Maradona believes that Lionel Messi does not have to prove his worth at the World Cup.

The five-time best footballer in the world faces criticism for not winning titles with the Argentine national team. Four years ago, the "albiceleste" reached the final, but they fell after Mario Gotze's goal.

Maradona led his country's national team to gold in 1986, and this difference leads many to say that Messi cannot compare to him or to the legendary Pele.

"I would advise Messi to just play, enjoy the game," - the former Argentine star told "Omnisport."

"He needs to forget the critics, whether he can win the World Cup or not."

"He doesn't have to prove anything. He must enjoy the game on the field."

"I don't know Sampaoli (the coach of the Argentine national team - ed. note), I don't know how he plays. However, I know many footballers and I know they will give it their all."

"I also believe they have a good chance of winning. Though I don't choose Argentina as the favorite, favorites never win."

The World Cup in Russia will begin in two weeks.
