During the World Cup qualifier match, the Polish national team defeated the Danes at home 3:2 and, along with the Montenegrin and Romanian teams, leads Group E. The hero of the match was the hosts' sniper Robert Lewandowski, who had already scored a hat-trick in the 48th minute, with the Poles leading 3:0. However, after the match, doubts arose about whether the second striker's goal should have been counted. In the 36th minute of the match, Lewandowski was given the opportunity to take an 11-meter penalty, but before taking the shot, he suddenly stopped. Danish goalkeeper Kasper Schmeichel dived, leaving Lewandowski to simply put the ball into the net. The Danes received a yellow card for protesting against the decision. Similar actions when taking penalties were banned by FIFA in 2010.
