E. Abidal officially ends his football career

Having overcome a serious illness and continuing his career, Eric Abidal confirmed at a press conference on Friday that he is retiring from professional football for good.

The 35-year-old footballer fought liver cancer from 2011 to 2012, which he successfully overcame and continued his football career. This season, the Frenchman wore the jersey of Piraeus's "Olympiacos" team, but yesterday, the information about E. Abidal's decision to retire appeared in the press.

"This is a very important moment in my career," said the defender. "Today I officially announce that I am ending my football career. I have made this decision only for personal reasons."

"I have always maintained a good level of play. I thank the president of 'Olympiacos' for his support and I am proud to have worn the jersey of 'Olympiacos.'

"I want to thank the coaches I have worked with, the doctors who have helped me, without whom I would hardly be speaking today," added E. Abidal.

E. Abidal is best known as a player for "Barcelona" club. He spent several years there and it seems that he will return to the club after his playing career.

"I have an offer from 'Barcelona' to work as a club ambassador, but I will make a decision later, as for now I want to rest and spend time with my family," said the former French national team player, concluding his speech at the press conference.

Throughout his career, E. Abidal has won a total of 21 titles with various teams. With "Barca," the Frenchman became Spanish champion four times and won the UEFA Champions League twice.

The 35-year-old footballer's career lasted almost 16 years, during which he wore the jerseys of teams such as "Monaco," "Lille," and "Lyon."
