In France, a new phone application has been released at the beginning of the European Football Championship, warning about terrorist attacks. Users will receive a notification if an armed attack or explosion is detected near them, as well as short instructions on what to do next to protect themselves and others.
When danger arises, the phone screen will turn bright red. The word WARNING will appear. Further - a brief explanation of what is happening and advice on how to react.
For example, find cover, alert people around you, do not overload phone lines, and so on.
The application works in English and French and in case of danger will not disclose the phone owner - it will not vibrate or emit audible signals.
For now, the application is designed to activate only for armed attacks and explosions, but later it will be improved to include industrial accidents, floods, and other disasters.
The application was created by volunteer rescuers, the first to respond to the attacks in November at the Paris "Le Belle Equipe" restaurant.
One of them, Jean Lucas Wertenschlagas, lives above the restaurant and provided first aid to the injured. He says that other warning systems in France are outdated.
The community of volunteer rescuers gathered by the man - the November 13 citizens' collective - asked the government to consider their recommendations. He says that the new application will help save lives.
