Approaching the 2016 European Championship, Bleacher Report will review and rank the top 200 players of the tournament, based on the positions of the footballers. In the fourth ranking review - center-backs.
The ranking is made up of two categories: one made up of defensive abilities (ball interceptions standing and skating and duels for high balls), and the other is his influence on the game (game reading, discipline, composure and ball skills). In each of these categories, the player can receive a maximum of 50 points, and by adding up the points obtained in both categories, the European Championship center-backs ranking was arranged.
In the second part of this review, positions 1-15 occupied by center-backs are presented to you. You can read about players remaining in positions 16-30 by clicking this link.
15. Shkodran Mustafi - Germany
Defense: 40/50
Having played in three out of four of the strongest European leagues during his career, Mustafi found his home at Valencia. In the two seasons with this team, he was not only a strong starting eleven player, but also significantly improved his game in the air, becoming more aggressive and more frequently interrupting opponent attacks by taking the ball.
Influence on the game: 38/50
Like most defenders, Mustafi occasionally makes mistakes and impulsive decisions during the season. However, many of these mistakes were made while trying to save the situation and help the team avoid conceding goals.
Overall rating: 78/100
14. Benedikt Howedes - Germany
Defense: 39/50
During his career spanning over 300 matches at Schalke, Howedes became one of the best Bundesliga defenders who did not play for Bayern or Borussia. However, last season was overshadowed by injuries - the player missed most of the season due to them.
Influence on the game: 40/50
The 28-year-old player is an irreplaceable leader in Schalke's defense, and since the 2011-2012 season, he has also been the team's captain.
Overall rating: 79/100
