European football spendthrifts receive concessions - UEFA softens FFP regulations

The European football leadership has decided to bow to the wealthy and soften the Financial Fair Play (FFP) rules introduced in 2011. Rules protecting clubs from excessive spending forced famous clubs like "Manchester City" and "Paris Saint-Germain" to tighten their belts last year.

Due to violations of FFP rules, they were not only subjected to monetary fines. But UEFA president Michel Platini announced that the situation will change this summer - although the rules worked well, they will be softened.

"The FFP rules worked successfully. We managed to improve the financial situation of European football. Losses of clubs from 1.7 billion euros recorded in 2011 dropped to 400 million. It is very important to regularly monitor the financial situation of clubs and make decisions," - said UEFA general secretary Gianni Infantino to the BBC.

FFP has received a lot of criticism over the past few years not only from the big clubs. Smaller clubs emphasized that because of the rules they cannot compete with bigger clubs at all, as they are not allowed to offer larger sums of money.
