Fabio Capello revealed how he managed to turn Zlatan Ibrahimovic into one of the best snipers on the planet – when he led the striker at Turin's "Juventus" club, the coach showed him successful episodes of Marco van Basten.
The current strategist of the Russian national team coached the Italian champions in 2006-2008. Capello says that at that time Ibrahimovic was a rough diamond.
"Ibra is extraordinarily talented and turning a player with such a gift into a goal machine is not difficult. I just had to explain a few things to him," the Italian told the "FIFA" page.
"It is necessary to work hard in training every day, which he did. He always spent a lot of time finishing attacks. At first, he could strike the ball very powerfully, but those strikes were not of high quality. Moreover, he was not excellent in the 'second level'. So, he spent a lot of time improving and playing with his head. The football he demonstrates is really the result of those training sessions."
"One day I called him and said: you are as good as Marco van Basten. You have the potential to become a player of that level. I will show you how he did everything,"
"I asked someone to create a video with all van Basten's goals. Then I showed it to him and said: you never get close to the goals. If you want to score, you have to get closer to them. You are always very far away. You have fun creating attacks and involving your teammates in them, but if you want to become a goalscorer, you must compete closer to the goal."
"He absorbed these words very quickly."
The 33-year-old Ibrahimovic, during his career representing "Malmo", "Ajax", "Juventus", "Inter", "Barcelona", "Milan", PSG and the Swedish national team, has scored more than 300 goals.
