Barcelona club midfielder Frenkie de Jong revealed to the Dutch football publication Voetbal International that he expected to win significantly more titles with this team, his experience playing in the Catalan club, his contract situation, and a previous injury:
"I’ll be honest, when I joined Barcelona, I didn’t expect that in five years I would only win La Liga, Copa del Rey, and the Spanish Super Cup.
I was hoping for twice as many titles, so that makes me sad... But in life, things happen that you cannot predict.”
"People think that I want to stay in the Barcelona team forever because life outside the pitch here is very good. Those are obviously positive things, but they become less important than what’s happening on the pitch.
If I felt that I couldn’t contribute enough to the team’s success, or if the club itself couldn’t compete for the highest goals, then I would leave myself.”
"My contract situation is not a problem for me.
I just want to play football, and later we will see what the club wants to do with me. Even later, I will decide with my family and agent what I want to do in the future.”
"When my ankle injury started, I had to manage it day and night... And those were the toughest years for me.
Every time I woke up, I felt pain once again. I had to take care of my ankle because it was a very serious injury.”
Frenkie de Jong's contract with Barcelona is valid until the summer of 2026.
