F. Perezas: Superleague was founded because of money © AFP

Madridd „Real“ President and future Superleague leader Florentino Perez talked about the motivation behind creating a new tournament. According to the Spaniard, it's all about money. „During the pandemic, we collectively lost 5 billion euros. Real alone suffered losses of 400 million euros“, explained F. Perez. „Important clubs from Spain, Italy and England had to find a solution to overcome such a complex financial situation. When you don't receive more income from television broadcasting rights, you have to play more attractive matches that fans from all over the world can watch. Football needs changes and this sport's peak must be more attractive at a global level. The Champions League lost interest in the 1950s. Changes took place and UEFA and FIFA were against them. However, football has changed. Now we see low-level matches, for example, Barcelona and Man Utd's match is more interesting than Man Utd and a mid-level match in the Champions League. We have fans all over the world and money flows from them. Money benefits everyone. It's like a pyramid. If clubs have money, they can generate income for everyone. So, one of the reasons for creating the Super League is to save football. We want to start as soon as possible, we want to talk to UEFA and FIFA, but they shouldn't be angry. UEFA is working on a different format, but I don't understand it and it doesn't bring more income to football, which is needed for its rescue. The new Champions League format is some kind of absurd“, explained F. Perez.
