In Saudi Arabia, individuals who criticize the government are still strictly punished.

Immediately affected were football fans who, according to foreign media, started chanting a peaceful Shia religious chant after a scored goal in January matches.

The court of the Middle Eastern state decided that two fans must spend one year in prison and pay fines reaching 2666 US dollars each.

Other supporters received half the fines.

Saudi Arabia is the only candidate to host the 2034 World Cup.
