The Italian club unexpectedly reinstated Francesco Guidolin as head coach, who was fired just three weeks ago. During this period, the team was led by assistant coach Renzo Gobbo.
Guidolin had been in charge of the Sicilian team since the beginning of the season, but was fired at the end of April when the team only managed to collect 7 points in an 11-game streak. His replacement, assistant Renzo Gobbo, along with youth team coach Rosario Pergolizzi, did not fare much better, and after a weekend defeat of 2-3 against the underdog "Ascoli," the "Palermo" management decided to bring back the former coach.
Having started the season successfully, "Palermo" was among the leaders for a while, but with a crisis hitting in the middle of the season, the team now sits in 7th place in Serie A with only two rounds left until the end of the Italian championship, realistically still aiming to compete in UEFA Cup matches next season.
Meanwhile, "Fiorentina," currently in 5th place, extended the contract with coach Cesare Prandelli until 2011. Despite a 15-point deficit at the beginning of the season due to a corruption scandal, this 49-year-old coach managed to lead the team into the European competition zone.
