FIFA considers an unprecedented innovation for the future World Cup © PA

After four years, the upcoming World Cup should stand out not only by a significantly increasing number of teams.

As reported by "The Athletic," FIFA officials are considering introducing an unprecedented innovation.

In the tournament taking place in the USA, Canada, and Mexico, there will be matches of up to 48 national teams, which will likely be divided into groups of three teams each.

With the increasing likelihood that more teams will secure equal points in the groups, FIFA has decided that instead of looking at statistical indicators, teams will have to determine the ratios in an additional match.

It is said that if a group match ends in a tie, the teams will immediately take penalty shootouts, and the winning team will earn an additional point.

There is also consideration for the option that such a series would take place before the match starts - to avoid manipulation.

However, the idea of penalty shootouts will likely be abandoned if it is finally decided to form groups with four teams each.
