FIFA continues to not abandon the idea of expanding the World Cup participants to 40 teams from 2026, but the final decision on this change is postponed.
On Thursday, just a few hours after another FIFA officials were arrested, a meeting was held to once again discuss the possibility of expanding the tournament.
The World Cup was already expanded in 1994 from 24 teams to 32, and another expansion should appease representatives from other continents who are now upset that UEFA has too many representatives in the tournament. It is claimed that despite the additional eight spots, Europe would not increase the number of its participants.
"It was stated that more details are needed on the economic perspectives of this decision. This is the thing we agreed on, but we will have to wait for the final decision," - said FIFA committee member Fernando Sarney to The Guardian.
If more teams played in the World Cup, the number of matches and revenue for all FIFA members would also increase, so there is no doubt that the majority of the 209 FIFA members would agree to such reforms in the vote.
