FIFA prepares to eliminate the Confederations Cup tournament and proposes innovation

The International Football Federation (FIFA) is undergoing a competition reform that will reduce the importance of national teams and give more power and money to clubs, according to lrytas.lt.

According to the Italian newspaper "La Gazzetta dello Sport," a project has been prepared that foresees an extended club championship instead of the FIFA Confederations Cup tournament, which was held one year before the World Cup.

The competitions held at the end of this year now last only one and a half weeks, but the new tournament would be much longer. It is planned that 24 teams would play in it, divided into 8 groups of three in the first stage.

Then there would be knockout matches (from the quarterfinals), so the finalists would play up to 5 matches. Europe would have 12 spots in it, South America - 5, Asia, Africa, and North America - 2 each, Oceania - 1. Europe would be represented by the finalists of the last four Champions League tournaments and other top teams according to the UEFA ranking.
