The FIFA Disciplinary Committee has decided that the punishment imposed on Uruguayan striker Luis Suarez was too harsh and has reduced it, reported lrytas.lt.
The 27-year-old forward was punished with a nine-match ban for biting Italian defender Giorgio Chiellini. He was also banned from any football-related activities for four months.
The head of the FIFA Disciplinary Committee, Claudio Sulser, announced that the player is allowed to train. "We cannot restrict the rights of the player. That would be disproportionate to the harm done," he said on Monday.
It means that he will be able to prepare for the season with Liverpool club. Suarez will also be allowed to undergo a medical examination if he moves to another club. It is reported that he is actively interested in Barcelona.
The Disciplinary Committee has also started considering the appeal from the Uruguayan Football Federation regarding the nine-match ban. Due to it, the player will miss eight more national team matches.
"It is currently under consideration. The appeal has been registered. I am inclined to refrain from comments," said C. Sulser.
The incident occurred during the match against the Italian national team when Suarez bit Giorgio Chiellini. At that time, the Uruguayan did not receive any punishment from the referees, but was later disqualified. Without their leader, the Uruguayan national team lost to the Colombian team in the quarterfinals.
